Understanding the research process:

The Psychology Internal Assessment. please refer to the Internal assessment tab for guidance on how to structure the IA.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Define the aim and target population of a study.
  • Discuss sampling techniques
  • Discuss ethical considerations when carrying out research
  • Explain the concept of generalisability
  • Explain the concepts of validity and reliability

Experimental methods.

  • Explain the purpose of null and experimental hypothesis
  • State the dependent and independent  variables in an experiment.
  • State operational definitions and variables
  • Explain confounding variables and how they may be controlled
  • Discuss the strengths and limitations of the experimental method.

These are the key concepts that you need to learn.  Please refer to chapter 1.2 p,17 and 1.3 p,25 in your course companion and the handout that I gave you.

Aim , procedure findings.

The aim is the purpose of the study. An aim indicates which behaviour or mental process will be studied. The group whose behaviour the researcher wishes to investigate is called the target population.

After identifying the aim, the researcher will plan the procedure. This is the step by step process used by the researcher to carry out the study.. In research articles, the procedure is always written in a way that makes it possible for others to understand how the data were collected. It is important that the research carefully defines the actual behaviour being studied.

The findings state how the researcher interpreted the data that were collected. research findings are always open to discussion and debate. Maybe the researcher has interpreted the results in a way that is biased, or perhaps there were flaws in the procedure. If other research studies confirm the findings, the study is more credible. However, findings say something only about the target group and may not be relevant to other groups or cultures.
