The Extended Essay

The Extended Essay in psychology.

Those of you who have begun to study psychology will have discovered that there are many fascinating areas for research.  The extended essay (EE) is a compulsory part of the IB programme and is an independent in-depth study investigation chosen by you in a specific area of interest. In psychology, the extended essay is literature based This means that you read scientific journals and books that deal with the topic that you are investigating.  Based on your reading you must formulate a focused research question and find appropriate material to answer it.  The EE should be in the form of an argument for its conclusion..  An extended essay in psychology cannot be an experiment, and you are not supposed to carry out any interviews to collect data.

Aim of the extended essay.

  • In working on the extended essay in psychology, you are expected to:
  • Plan and pursue a research project with intellectual initiative and insight
  • Formulate a precise research question
  • Gather and interpret material from sources appropriate to the research question
  • Structure a reasoned argument in response to the research question, on the basis of the material gathered
  • Present your extended essay in a format appropriate to psychology, acknowledge sources in one of the established academic ways
  • Use the terminology and language appropriate to psychology with skill and understanding
  • Apply analytical and evaluate skills appropriate to psychology, with an understanding of the implications and the context of their research.

Do’s and Don’ts of Extended Essays

Do:

  • Be careful not to plagiarize
  • Choose a topic for which a substantial number of academic references are available
  • Find your resources before you finalize your question.
  • Write a focused research question that is explicitly formulated and well expressed.
  • Include analysis and evaluation.
  • Consider more than one side of an argument – make sure that there is a debate relevant to your question.
  • Mention the need for further research and unresolved questions within your conclusion.
  • Cite your sources accurately – and do not list sources that you have not cited in your paper.

Don’t:

  • Choose a topic without looking for resources first!
  • Choose a topic that is too broad for an essay of 4000 words.
  • Conduct your own experiment, interviews, surveys, or observations.
  • Write a descriptive essays.  These begin with words like “What” or “Which”.
  • Write a short conclusion of only 3 – 5 sentences.
  • Exceed the word limit.

It is recommended that you do not attempt  to do your EE in psychology unless you are studying this subject as part of IB programme. If you are serious about an EE in psychology make sure you  choose your topic from the following. Write your area of interest on your proposal. Work with your supervisor to formulate a research question.

To be successful it is really important to keep your research question well focused.

Too broad; Does stress relate to illness? Focused: To what extent is stress involved in coronary heart disease?

Too broad: What determines whether flashbulb memories of an event will form? Focused: What is the current evidence about the role of social sharing of memories in the formation and maintenance of flashbulb memories?

Examples of topics and essay questions:

  • Sports psychology: Is it possible to prevent burnout in professional young athletes?
  • Developmental: To what extent are attachment patterns culturally determined?
  • Abnormal: Why are more women than men diagnosed with depression?
  • Relationships: The origins of attraction; aggression
  • Health: Effectiveness of  health promotion strategies in smoking.

  • What is the best way to be happy at work? Is happiness compatible with productivity?  Is there any evidence that companies which treat their workers well are more commercially successful?
  • What are the psychological consequences of current increases in job-insecurity and unemployment arising from the ‘credit-crunch’ ?
